The main issue in this research is how the conflict between personal desires, reality, and social norms affects the freedom of the main characters in these two stories. The aim of this research is to understand the psychological dynamics experienced by the main characters as they struggle to achieve freedom that is limited through self-realization. The researcher wants to see freedom from Id, Ego, Superego of each of the main characters of desires and what they actually want. The method used is qualitative analysis with Freud's theoretical approach, where data is obtained from the narrative texts of the two short stories. The finding of this research shows that they navigate the conflicts between the Tripartite of how the characters can get freedom through self-realization. This analysis highlights the importance of perseverance, social support, and self-determination. By understanding this, readers, especially women can achieve personal freedom within restrictive social contexts.
2024-11-11T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Rafael Aglis Ariya Tamtamahttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/3976PROJECT BASED DEBATING STRATEGY TO PROMOTE THE STUDENTS’SPEAKING ABILITY 2024-11-09T21:22:14+07:00Aswadi Jaya[email protected]Rudi Hartono[email protected]Sri Wahyuni[email protected]Henrikus Joko Yulianto[email protected]
The purpose of this research is to examine how the online PjBL Mixidea debate technique ought to be incorporated into the digital technology learning orientations at UPGRI Palembang to help students with their public speaking. The study employed a quasi-experimental technique known as a non-equivalent UPGRI Palembang. Data collection procedures: (1) validity; (2) reliability. A statistically significant difference was found in post-experiment speaking test scores between the experimental group and the control group, as compared to pre-experiment scores. Results improved for students who were taught with the PjBL Mixidea online debate method. When compared to the control group, the experimental group generally performs better on post-tests. After administering eight different treatments to students in class X at UPGRI Palembang, the authors found that PjBL Mixidea's online debate strategy boosted students' public speaking skills. The students are in agreement that employing PjBL Mixidea's method of online discussion can help them become better public speakers. Students who were educated using PjBL Mixidea's online debate approach clearly outperformed those who were not.
2024-11-11T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Aswadi Jayahttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/3977Impoliteness strategies used by haters and supporters of presidential candidates in cyber-conflicts2024-11-09T21:31:41+07:00Raidatul Hasanah[email protected]Sri Minda Murni[email protected]Fauziah Khairani Lubis[email protected]
The 2024 Indonesian presidential election is anticipated to be highly contested, with the potential for online hostility to escalate into real-world conflict. This study examines the impoliteness strategies used by supporters and haters of presidential candidates on social media, specifically within Instagram comments. Employing a qualitative approach, the study analyzed a sample of comments, revealing a predominance of negative impoliteness (70%), followed by positive impoliteness (46%). Sarcasm and mock impoliteness were observed in 17% of cases, while bald-on-record impoliteness was the least common (11%). Interestingly, no evidence of withhold politeness was found. These findings highlight the prevalence of online aggression in Indonesian election discourse, underscoring the need for strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of online impoliteness and protect national unity.
2024-11-11T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Raidatul Hasanahhttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/3979THE EMPATHY FOR HUMANITY IN THE ALBUM “EVERYDAY LIFE” BY COLDPLAY2024-11-11T17:23:50+07:00Galih Octav Pradana[email protected]Maria Johana Ari Widayanti[email protected]
Coldplay is a pop and rock band born in 1996 in London, British. The objective of the study is to analyze how Coldplay expresses empathy for the current state of the world in recent years (such as wars and racism). To analyze the selected lyrics, the researcher used sign, signifier, signified by Roland Barthes combined with Charles Sanders Peirce’s index, icon symbol, and literal environment to connect these songs to the current state of society. Findings showed that the lyrics do have a humanitarian message that Coldplay wants to convey, also the delivery of empathy is different in each song. As a result, the song Orphans emphasizes empathy for war victims with the majority using index in carrying the message, Arabesque emphasizes the racism towards Arab Muslims with the majority using symbols in conveying the message, Everyday Life emphasize surviving in a difficult life which is more dominant symbols and index, Old friend emphasize the nature of friendship with the use of icons in conveying the message, and Children of Adam emphasize the equality of humans using index and icons.
2024-11-11T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Galih Octav Pradana https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/4063The Spiritual Role of Lake Across Legends in Indonesia: Nature as (More Than) the Divine Retributor 2024-11-28T17:09:53+07:00Aryl Timothy Madilah[email protected]
Across many legends in Indonesia, nature takes the role of the divine retribution, the ultimate punishment against evil and wrongdoings. This depiction of nature may at first glance seem negligible; however, this depiction may also be seen as describing the relationship that spiritual ecology holds between human and nature. This paper compares the role of the lake-creation in four written legends across Indonesia: the Legend of Danau Toba from North Sumatra, the Legend of Rawa Pening from Central Java, the Legend of Danau Tondano from North Sulawesi, and the Legend of Danau Kelimutu from East Nusa Tenggara. In these legends, the apparent role of divine retribution nature has over the character highlights humans as a part of nature, and not as its master. It reflects how the people owning these legends see themselves in relation to the environment where they live, a view that is certainly applicable to modern life. The view that nature executes divine retribution towards human’s malevolence serves as a reminder that nature will always be the bigger picture of human life despite its seemingly confined place in a man-centered society
2024-11-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Aryl Timothy Madilahhttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/3983Rewriting Women in Romance Through Taylor Swift’s Song2024-11-11T20:21:24+07:00Yuli Mahmudah Sentana[email protected]
Romance is always referred to as a way for men to dominate women through the identity, roles and attitudes that women must carry out in a love relationship. However, in the development of feminism, the breaking of masculine and feminine stereotypes has the effect that love no longer restrains women. As a female singer and songwriter, Taylor Swift tells many romance stories in her songs. This research discusses how Swift rewrites women in romance. The twelve selected songs explain that women know their existence, identity, position, and thoughts in romantic relationships. Gender equality in romance is also expressed in these songs through how women can become subjects in romance. She has the same role, status, desires and rights as men in romance. Women cannot only choose to break up but also take responsibility and face separation as well as men. She dared to separate, did not whine, and could continue life without her lover.
2024-11-11T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Yuli Mahmudah Sentana https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/3984Ecocriticism Concepts in Robert Frost’s “Out, Out-“ and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”2024-11-11T20:32:36+07:00Rr. Arielia Yustisiana[email protected]Christina Maya Iriana Sari[email protected]
The research aims to discuss the concepts of ecocriticism in Robert Frost’s poems. There are two poems that will be discussed, namely “Out, Out-“ and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” The two poems are chosen as the primary data of the research because both poems depicts human and nature interaction. Ecocriticism itself is a literary theory that examines the relationship between literature and the natural world. It focuses on the setting of the two poems and human and nature relation. Descriptive research is chosen as the method of research because this research aims accurately describes a phenomenon of human and natural world in Robert Forst’s poems. In terms of literary study, there are three literary approaches that are relevant in the research. Structural and formalist approaches are the general ones when the research takes data from a poem, while the specific literary approach is ecocriticism approach. “Out, Out-“ and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” are two of Robert Frost’s poem that portray the relation between human and natural world. They can be analyzed through ecocritical lens to explore the complex interplay between humans and nature, ecological consequences of human actions, and the intersection of human existence and the natural world.
2024-11-11T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Rr. Because of this situation Simone de Beauvoir, a French philosopher, later criticized gender inequality in her writing "The Second Sex”. This paper delves into the phenomenon of slavery endured by women and children during the Victorian era, as depicted in Anna Sewell`s "Black Beauty". By contextualizing the characters' experiences within historical realities, this study contributes to a broader comprehension of the representation of gender oppression and woman slavery in that book. Using Stuart Hall's representation theory, it analyzes how societal norms and power dynamics during Queen Victoria's reign shape the portrayal of female characters. Hall's theory highlights that representations are constructed through cultural and historical contexts, not direct reflections of reality. Ultimately, the analysis shows that "Black Beauty" effectively portrays the harsh realities of slavery, especially for women and children, making it a significant social critique of its time.
2024-11-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Stevane Delsancy Pariamahttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/4066A Comparative Study of Human-Nature Relationship in Indonesian and Japanese Folklore 2024-11-28T17:44:32+07:00Ni Putu Zefanya Putri Gracia Hartawan[email protected]
Human and nature are inseparable as they become a unit and interchange with each other where both of relationships are also described in a lot of literature everywhere. In Indonesia, the depictions of the relationship are told through folklore. La Moelu from Southeast Sulawesi tells a story about a boy who kept his fish that he caught from fishing, took care of it, and the fish granted him a reward. There's also a Japanese folklore about a man who saved a wounded crane and it returned him a favor for the assistance, called Tsuru no Ongaeshi. As these two stories similarly talk about men-nature relation, this research aims to compare the cultural background and the mutual relationship between men and nature. The analysis will be done through the first wave of ecocriticism perspective. This research reveals that both of the main characters from those stories have attempted to preserve nature. However, when greed seeps into men's consciousness, they become less considerate of the environment and have to face the consequences of their actions. This research demonstrates the men-nature relation through folklore as a way to show individuals' dynamic reactions and behavior towards nature to uncover nature's imbalance when human attitudes deviate.
2024-11-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Ni Putu Zefanya Putri Gracia Hartawanhttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/4067A Comparative Analysis of Lauren Wellbank’s ”The Boy and The Tree” and Steven Moe’s “The Apple Tree”: Ecocriticism Approach 2024-11-28T17:56:32+07:00Tiffani Willin Nanyan[email protected]
Humans have a very important role in maintaining the balance of the earth's ecosystem. Human actions that are not wise in maintaining and caring for nature have resulted in damaging the ecosystem and giving impacts such as natural disasters that occur in Indonesia and abroad these days. Lauren Wellbank’s ”The Boy and The Tree” and Steven Moe’s “The Apple Tree” highlight the connection between humans and trees, emphasizing human influence on nature and the significance of protecting and maintaining the natural environment. This paper aims to analyze the human-nature interactions and the impact of human actions depicted in the two stories. This research shows that the consequences of overexploitation of natural resources have resulted in many adverse impacts on the climate, wildlife habitats and wider environmental damage. The environmental damage that continues today puts the health of our planet at risk. Thus, the personification of trees, depicted as a living being that can speak and feel, leaves a message to remind humans of their ecological responsibilities to protect and preserve nature.
2024-11-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Tiffani Willin Nanyan https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/4069Types of Males’ Compliment Expressions for Indonesian Female Politicians2024-11-28T20:45:42+07:00Shanty Anugerah Yuni Puspita Sari Duwila[email protected]Ari Astutik[email protected]Erika Ardyanti[email protected]
The belief that politics is a male-dominated sphere remains strong in Indonesia. However, the increasing participation of women in politics has also received positive appreciation from men. Masculine judgments about women’s potential can be observed through compliments in social media. Behind these compliments lies an implicit message of how men perceive and value women’s presence in the political arena. The purpose of this research is to explore the types of compliments frequently given to Indonesian women involved in politics. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data consists of comments from netizens on the Instagram posts of five Indonesian female political figures. Documentation techniques are used for data collection, while Content Analysis is employed to data analysis. The steps include: 1) selecting political posts, 2) extracting top-liked compliments, 3) identifying types of compliments, 4) categorizing compliments, 5) presenting data, 6) interpreting the, and 7) drawing conclusions. The results show that the compliment types that the women receive from men are in the forms of evaluations or appreciations. The patriarchal system in Indonesia does not serve as a barrier for Indonesian women to actively participate in politics. Men will appreciate and respect women who demonstrate competence and good traits.
2024-11-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Shanty Anugerah Yuni Puspita Sari Duwila https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/4103How does Indonesian Secondary-ELT Textbook Shape Environmental Consciousness? An Ecocritical Discourse Analysis 2024-12-23T08:40:47+07:00Dihliza Basya[email protected]Belqis Azida Maulidia[email protected]
In numerous studies conducted worldwide researchers, academics, and educators have been drawn to the environmental values present in English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of literature that examines the environmental values of EFL textbook, particularly in Indonesia. This study employs Eco-Critical Discourse Analysis (ECDA) to scrutinize the representation of environmental issues in ELT textbooks for secondary school affect Indonesian students’ environmental awareness. The verbal data was analysed using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Analysis. Kress and Van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar Theory was implemented to explore, comprehend, and investigate visual representations from selected ELT Textbook. This investigation assists in the development of ELT textbook that is consistent with environmental education principles. It is regarded necessary to conduct additional educational on environmental issues in Indonesian ELT textbooks that are used in the majority of Secondary Schools in order to foster a greater understanding of the application of environmental awareness principles in the ELT context.
2024-11-30T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Dihliza Basyahttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/4068Anthropocentrism: A Comparative Study of Hemingway and Faulkner’s Perception on Human-Nature Relationship 2024-11-28T20:02:02+07:00Alexander Paruda Gaman[email protected]
From the early-to-mid 20th century, the environmental issues portrayed in literature changed human environmental awareness and attitudes toward nature worldwide. Hemingway’s The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber and Faulkner’s The Bear depicts the connection between man and nature and how the characters’ attitudes and actions affect the environment. This study aims to compare and contrast the portrayals of the relationship between man and nature in both stories and how the authors’ perception of the relationship differs. By utilizing a framework of anthropocentrism, this paper will analyze how the characters’ actions and attitudes towards nature represent the authors’ perceptions of the human-nature relationship. Hemingway’s story represents the exploitative attitude of hunting wild animals, while Faulkner’s story portrays a deep and respectful connection with nature, thus rejecting the idea of anthropocentrism. These different findings reflect the authors’ contrasting perceptions of the relationship between man and the natural world, formed by their experiences and backgrounds. Hemingway’s depiction of exploitative hunting reflects his adventurous experience on the African safari, while Faulkner’s portrayal of interconnection with nature resembles his connection to the southern rural wilderness of Mississippi. The contrasting perceptions show that the authors’ backgrounds play an important role in developing their perspectives and values of human-nature relationships, affecting the way they present different viewpoints and themes in their work
2024-11-01T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Alexander Paruda Gamanhttps://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/ELLit/article/view/3982Breaking Down Stereotypes: A Critical Discourse Study of Sexism in English Textbooks2024-11-11T20:16:46+07:00Sa’idatul Habibah[email protected]Dihliza Basya[email protected]
This study aims to critically examine and deconstruct gender stereotypes embedded and hidden within the EFL textbook. Through analyzing various visual images and illustration, this study will focus on identifying benevolent and hostile sexist values (Glick & Fiske, 1996) within the newly published autonomous curriculum EFL textbook. In doing so, Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 2003) will be employed in order to unearth hidden biases and depict the representativeness of each gender based on benevolent and hostile sexist values. Meanwhile, to analyze the hidden value within visual images, this study employs visual grammar theory (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2021) and textual analysis (Halliday., 1978). The findings of this study indicate that EFL textbooks effectively incorporate sexism values against gender stereotypes, including Benevolent and Hostile sexism (Glick & Fiske, 1996), consistently throughout the visual and verbal text. Both visual and verbal texts illustrate how these values are integrated into current topics that are associated with gender stereotypes in the form of prejudice contained in EFL textbooks. The implication of this study is a more concrete application for improving educational materials and practices by trying to represent gender stereotypes in EFL textbooks towards ELT. The results of this study will hopefully become empirical evidence within the huge body of gender representation studies. Additionally, the result of this study will hopefully provide valuable insight for students, teachers, and curriculum developers, and broaden their outlooks concerning the hidden benevolent and hostile sexist values within the EFL textbook.
2024-11-11T00:00:00+07:00Copyright (c) 2024 Sa’idatul Habibah
