Integrating Technology, Social Systems, and Equity for Reducing Health Disparities: a Bibliometric Review (2014-2024)

Abstract

Health disparities persist due to systemic factors that negatively affect disadvantaged groups worldwide. Digital health technologies hold potential for addressing these issues but integrating them with social systems requires a deeper understanding of how they can promote equity. This study examines the current state of knowledge on technology, social determinants, and health equity through a bibliometric analysis of published research in PubMed (2014-2024). Methods: we are using R packages from the Bibliometrix suite software, we analysed 1384 papers to identify key trends, clusters, and conceptual connections. Results of the study show three main themes emerged: digital health equity, technology-driven interventions for marginalized populations, and integrating social determinants of health (SDOH) into health information systems (HIS). Although some solutions showed promise, they often failed to address the underlying social factors that contribute to health disparities. Conclusion: Transforming health systems requires a shift towards socio-technical approaches that prioritize equity from the outset. Future research should involve stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and focus on evaluating the impact of interventions on reducing health inequalities.
