Abstract

Competitive martial arts such as wushu require intensive daily physical activity, high psychological endurance, and the ability to cope with constant competitive stress. These conditions not only shape athletes’ physical capabilities but also construct their existential awareness of freedom, responsibility, and authenticity. This study aims to explore the existential meaning of freedom and responsibility among national wushu athletes in relation to daily physical activity, stress, and flow state. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through an extensive literature review, the study integrates perspectives from sports psychology and existential philosophy. Thematic and hermeneutic analyses were applied to interpret the interrelation between the three variables. The results reveal that physical activity serves as the foundation of existential embodiment, stress functions as an existential test of freedom and self-awareness, and flow state represents the realization of authentic consciousness where body, mind, and spirit are unified. Collectively, these dynamics illustrate that athletic performance is not solely a physical pursuit but a holistic existential process that balances freedom, discipline, and responsibility. The findings emphasize the need for athlete-centered training programs that integrate psychological mindfulness, emotional regulation, and existential reflection to enhance both performance and well-being. This study contributes to a deeper philosophical understanding of human existence within the context of competitive.
