Writing is a challenging skill for students in the first semester of seventh grade. It involves not only composing words into well-structured sentences but also understanding the function, meaning, and components of each word. Realizing this, the research was conducted with the aim of improving students' writing abilities in self-introduction through the game of snakes and ladders. Eventually, the students will produce self-introduction texts that will be uploaded to the Padlet application. The research participants consisted of 32 students from class VII H at SMP Negeri 36 Semarang. The method used was Classroom Action Research. Data collected for this research included observations, questionnaires, and tests. Two sets of pre-tests and post-tests were used to record improvements in students' writing skills. This research was conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of two meetings involving planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research results showed that the application of the snakes and ladders game in improving students' writing skills provided good achievement in producing self-introduction texts. With an average pre-test score of 57.78, the average writing test score in the second cycle was 63.214, and the average post-test score was 80.681. The analysis of the questionnaire and observation also supported the idea that the snakes and ladders game can be applied not only in writing self-introduction texts but also in various other subjects and materials.
Albaninda Nurulhaq Rossana Rossana Pasca Kalisa Copyright (c) 2023 UNNES-TEFLIN National Conference 2023-11-16 2023-11-16 5 1 12 INTEGRATING TED TALKS INTO EFL LEARNERS’ CLASSROOM: LESSON FROM INDONESIAN EFL TEACHERS https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/utnc/article/view/2593
This qualitative case study investigates the integration of TED Talks into EFL classrooms in Cirebon, Indonesia. Speaking ability is the capacity to master learning, which explains how far the language itself has progressed, in relation to study. There are a number of issues with pupils studying English, particularly for students' speaking skills, according to field surveys and interviews with a variety of students and English subject teachers. Students struggle with a number of issues, particularly speaking English. First, fewer difficult-to-understand teaching techniques. Second, the approach or material used is still unsupportive for kids who lack vocabulary and confidence. To improve speaking abilities, these pupils must immediately practice using engaging techniques. Lack of desire and confidence among pupils is another element that contributes to their English proficiency issues. Internal aspects include a strong desire for students to learn, the appropriate mindset, and, of course, excellent English speaking. A person's attitude toward life and learning can also be influenced by their environment. Unfortunately, learning English is difficult in Indonesia, and as a result, many students are terrified of making mistakes, pronouncing words incorrectly, and using vocabulary they don't understand. Those skills also align with the challenge for higher education institutions to develop curricula in the 4.0 industry era to produce graduates who have 21st-century skills, that is HOTS (high-order thinking skills), which covers communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creative thinking, computational logic, compassion, and civic responsibility. Students are digital natives, but technology implication limits their cognitive thinking potential when they depend too much on it that avoid thinking enhancing, discovering information, and problem-solving steps. Those constraints challenge teachers to emerge the student’s critical thinking abilities. This research aims to propose critical literacy using digital technology in shaping students to be critical thinkers and to promote that digital literacy is essential to ensure that technology is merely a support, not a substitute for teachers to achieve quality teaching practice. The research method is a case study since it produces an in-depth, multifaceted understanding of a complex problem in the actual setting of integrating technology and critical thinking skill. This study is a two-cycle classroom action investigation. Planning, action, observation, and reflection comprise the research procedure. The researchers collaborated with the English teacher and other individuals. This study concentrates on thirty students in class X8 at SMAN 5 Semarang during the 2022-23 academic year. Using classroom observation, interviews, and tests, the data was collected. Observational and interviewbased data are evaluated qualitatively. The observer evaluated the learning using an observation sheet. Besides, the interview data were additionally organized, analyzed, coded, and interpreted. In the meantime, data from the pre-test, post-test cycle I, and post-test cycle II are analyzed by comparing the mean writing scores of students based on the following five criteria: content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Before and after using picture series and dialogic feedback within the framework of the process approach, this study found a substantial change in the mean narrative writing scores of students. Picture series help students generate and develop ideas, determine the meaning of words, and comprehend the actions of the characters. Furthermore, the implementation of dialogic feedback can assist students in actively constructing meaning from feedback and synergistically enhancing their narrative writing abilities. It is suggested that EFL instructors use picture series and dialogic feedback within the framework of the process approach to make the learning process more engaging and to develop students' narrative writing skills.
Irda Afdila Iswatun Chasanah Maria Johana Ari Widayanti Copyright (c) 2023 UNNES-TEFLIN National Conference 2023-11-16 2023-11-16 5 380 389 ITEM ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TEACHER-MADE TEST https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/utnc/article/view/2627
Evaluation is a systematic process of determining the extent to which instructional objectives are achieved by the students. The project involved collaborative activities where six groups of 36 students collectively participated in the creation of digital stories. These activities encompassed various DST projects, including selecting a story theme, developing the narrative, revising the storyline, and presenting the final product digitally. The findings of this case study indicate that student participants were able to enhance their story literacy skills, foster digital literacy development, engage actively in the story drafting process, and enhance their competence in creating and publishing digital storytelling content. The lesson plan provides pre-activities, main activities, and reflection at the end of the lesson, supported by various digital tools. Digital literacy may be a concern in this lesson plan because the students need to work collaboratively using Google Slides and other supporting digital tools. However, the students are expected to collaboratively use Google Slides as the primary digital tool in writing the procedural text. However, the researchers in this present study found that the mid-semester average score for a professional reading course at a state university in Central Java showed less than optimal numbers. In connection with that, previous studies have shown that there is a relationship between student personality and student learning outcomes. On the other hand, only a number of studies showed different results regarding the relation between students' personality and students' reading mastery. To give more understanding on this problem, the researchers in this study are interested to see whether there is a relationship between EFL students' extraversion and their mastery of reading skills. Hence, correlational research was the methodology employed in this study. The participants consist of 38 students majoring in English education. Using an International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) questionnaire, makes it simple to ascertain the personality of each respondent, regardless of whether they are high-extraversion or low-extraversion learners. The results of the participants' mid-semester tests for the professional reading course also provided evidence of their mastery of reading skills. Both reading and extraversion scores include quantitative data. Hence, in order to analyse the data, SPSS and Pearson product-moment regression were also employed. The study's results convinced the researchers that there is no connection between extraversion and EFL students' reading mastery.
Panggih Rahardi Sarifah Achmad Lilia Indriani Copyright (c) 2023 UNNES-TEFLIN National Conference 2023-11-16 2023-11-16 5 541 552 INCREASING ENGLISH VOCABULARY THROUGH WORDWALL GAMES FOR GRADE 8 SMP NEGERI 2 SEMARANG https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/utnc/article/view/2644
In conducting the learning process, teachers can choose and use several learning media in accordance with the characteristics of students and subject matter. Most researchers tend to focus on student variables rather than other factors in the learning process. When addressed, speaking and writing receive more attention compared to reading and listening. This systematic literature review provides a summary of the findings from studies on the trends and outcomes of Contextual-Based Instruction for teaching reading. The research data comprise 25 journals published between 2017 and 2023, obtained from sources such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and Crossref, specifically relevant to CTL-based reading instruction. The results indicate that contextual learning in reading skills is being explored by researchers to a lesser extent than other English skills. This is evident from the scarcity of publications over the years, and the trend appears to be declining even until June 2023. Further research on contextual learning in reading instruction has the potential to enhance the existing literature and knowledge in this field. Despite discrepancies between the findings of different researchers and even with the CTL theory, contextual learning demonstrates positive outcomes in improving students’ comprehension. Future research can consider various areas of investigation, including teachers’ perception of CTL learning, students’ responses, classroom interaction, and the development of models or designs to effectively apply contextual learning and enhance students’ reading performance and comprehension.
Samsudin Samsudin La Ode Rasmin Adi Isma Copyright (c) 2023 UNNES-TEFLIN National Conference 2023-11-16 2023-11-16 5 598 612 INTEGRATING GAME-BASED LEARNING OF WORDWALL IN TEACHING AT THE RIGHT LEVEL TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION (A CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH) https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/utnc/article/view/2648
Learning in the 21st century demands that teachers provide active learning and utilize technological advancement as the learning media. There has been debate concerning the relationship between age and language learning for a long time. It is often believed that kids pick up languages more quickly than adults do. Hence, this article is aimed to determine about the age differences between young and adult language learners, the critical period theory, and the effect of age on second language learning. This study was conducted as library research that focused on the relationship between age and second language acquisition. The data was obtained from research articles that had been published at any period in indexed national or international publications. The result of this article is that there are other factors besides age that affect language acquisition. There are other additional elements that contribute to language development, both internal and external. Some experts claim that youngsters are only better in some areas, like as pronounciation, while being weaker in others, such as morphology, compared to the greater morphological skills of adult learners. The critical period hypothesis, a theory that contends that learning a second language is ideally started at an early age, supports the researcher's final finding that age affects the process of language acquisition.
Silfa Dzukhriyah Aprilian Ria Adisti Copyright (c) 2023 UNNES-TEFLIN National Conference 2023-11-16 2023-11-16 5 618 627 CONCEPTUALIZING AND IMPLEMENTING HYBRID LEARNING IN THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PERSPECTIVES https://proceeding.unnes.ac.id/utnc/article/view/2650
The concept of the Hybrid learning model is analogous to “new wine in an old bottle” construing an old concept re-conceptualized nowadays along with the fast growth of digital technology in the field of education.
