Students’ Perception on Bibliotheraphy Technique in Summarizing Texts: A Preliminary Research

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) looking for the students’ understanding of bibliotherapy technique, (2) finding out from where they got the references, (3) getting the way the students selected the important information from the references, (4) the way they make summary from those references, and (5) the chance for them to apply bibliotherapy technique in making summary from their references. It used descriptive qualitative research. The population were students of English Education Department of Universitas PGRI Semarang, on the 6th semester who have been done their reading course and on stage of arranging final project or scientific paper proposal. They were 78 students. The sample is taken from all the population. To answer the research questions, the writer uses questionnaire. The collecting responses were then analyzed to get the students’ understanding and perception of using bibliotherapy as a technique in summary texts. It is concluded that: (1) 25% of the respondents know about bibliotherapy technique; (2) The respondents finding out the references from  Google Scholar (62,5%), from university library or other library (25%), certain website (50%), and others (50%); (3) The respondents selected the important information by making short summary per paragraph (37,5%), making long summary each paragraph (12,5%), taking whole citation per paragraph (12,5%), and other ways (37,5%); (4) the respondents summarized the text by underlining the important sentences or statements (75%), making block on the important sentences or statements (12,5%); and (5) 75% of respondents doubted to apply bibliotherapy technique in making summary from their references.  The suggestions are getting close to bibliotherapy to know its concept and applying the concept of bibliotherapy technique in finding references, making summary, and arranging final project proposal for university students.
